Teacher Attrition & Diversity Highlighted in New Report

A new Alliance report addresses teacher quality in Colorado, and explores teacher attrition and diversity. 

Shining the Light II: State of Teacher Quality, Attrition and Diversity in Colorado
links teacher attrition with student performance and tags the cost at more than $70 million in 2005 alone.

Diversity of students is growing rapidly, but these students have little chance of benefitting from a teacher of the same race: the proportion of Latino students in Colorado is growing 5 times faster than that of Latino teachers.

The report issues five recommendations:

1. Increase the diversity of the teacher workforce
2.
Focus attention on teacher retention
3.
Create structured feedback loops between k-12 & teacher preparation institutions
4. Establish a unique teacher identifier
5.
Conduct statewide surveys of teachers

  Quality Teachers Commission Continues Progress Toward Pilot Teacher ID

The Commission established by Senate Bill 07-140 continues to hammer out the details and parameters to institute a teacher identifier in Colorado.  An effort to obtain a pilot in the 2008-09 school year was delayed.  The Commission has been reviewing information about identifiers, benefits, risks and needed protections.
